Tidy – chapter eight: home is where the tile is

What does a life look like that is designed with love? Margaret inherited her mother’s house with the words, “Make this house a home.” Margaret is finding out what that means.

road focus

(Continued) “What should I do with this?” asks Margaret.  “Hmm?” Margaret looks up and watches her neighbor Reese apply a layer of thinset to her kitchen wall. He does it with such care and attention, you’d think it was his home. But that’s just the way Reese is. He is the most present and generous person that Margaret has met. Ever since he came over to deliver her package of sample tiles, she has grown accustomed to him stopping by to share a cup of tea (he doesn’t drink coffee and Margaret has recently given it up), or help her with her redecorating quandaries.

Margaret holds up a picture. “It’s my ex-boyfriend.” “Looks like a nice fellow.” “Yeah, but should I keep it or throw it away?” asks Margaret.  “What’s the book say?” Margaret reads.

“It is not our memories but the person we have become because of those past experiences that we should treasure.”

“Sounds like good advice. What’s that book again?” Margaret shows him The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. “Looks interesting. You know, my wife was Japanese. She taught me patience.” Reese’s wife passed away five years ago. “Or rather, I taught her patience,” he laughs. “What do you mean?” Margaret asks.

“I had a lot of anger.” Reese carefully presses a sheet of colorful glass tile into the thinset. Margaret can’t imagine Reese that way, and has struggled with similar feelings. “What did you do?” she asks. “I had to develop compassion for myself. And humility.  Basically,” he wipes his forehead, “I had to be ok with being vulnerable. It took some time.” Margaret studies the picture of her ex-boyfriend, Sam. It’s hard for her to believe that their relationship is over even though it’s been a year, almost to the day.

“What did Sam teach you?” asks Reese, as he cuts a sheet of tile to fit the small space around the outlet. “I think I’m still figuring that out.” Margaret takes a sip of her tea, suddenly missing her crack coffee. “Come on, you know.” says Reese. “I do?” asks Margaret. “Sure, just ask your heart. That’s what my wife used to say.”

heart

My heart? “Well, the thought of a chocolate-glazed donut sounds good right about now,” answers Margaret. Reese keeps working. He’s either in deep, contemplative tile installation, or he’s creating space for her to answer; she’s not sure.  Back to her heart.

Hello heart? It’s me, Margaret. I’m glad you’re feeling better these days, and we don’t think about Sam so much anymore, but I’m wondering if you would be willing to open for a moment and reveal what Sam taught me.

She listens… Oh. It’s more a feeling than an answer. A knowing. “He taught me to stop running.” says Margaret.

“Well, there you go,” says Reese. “So, what do you think?” He steps away from the wall revealing the beginning of a home that Margaret has only started to believe in.  She smiles.Micheline

Putting the LUSH in Luscious Glass Tile

Are you in the process of selecting the perfect Lush® glass subway tile color for your project?

Selecting the right  tile color can be difficult  – especially from a computer screen!  We find ourselves regularly attempting to describe the nuances of similar Lush® colors over the phone, and trust me, it’s not easy!

In an effort to help make this process a little easier, we’ve taken these pictures to compare the subtle variations of our most popular Lush® colors.

Enjoy!

Modwalls_Cameo Almond Driftwood Dune Reef Taupe

  • Cameo is our latest neutral addition.  We would describe this as a rich, creamy color.  It evokes a real warmth – like coffee with lots of creamer in it.  Yummmmmy!
  • Almond is slightly more golden-beige than Cameo.  Goes well with lots of earth-tone granites.
  • Driftwood is a gray-ish beige color with a faint hint of green.  It’s definitely the chameleon of our neutral colors and tends to go with all sorts of materials and design aesthetics.
  • Dune is the most golden of our neutral colors. We often say it’s more peachy/beige/buttercream-y.
  • Reef is a rich brown color…like a freshly roasted coffee bean.  In some lighting conditions, it appears to have a hint of green.
  • Taupe is a gorgeous warm gray color.  (One of my personal favorites actually :)).

Cloud thru Bluebell

  • Cloud is our white-est white possible in our Lush® line.  Made of clear glass, this is truly a white glass subway tile (which we know is hard to find!)
  • Breaker is a beautiful light and bright medium aqua blue color.
  • Vapor is our most pale, watery blue color.
  • Sky is a true sky-blue color.  Think of how the sky looks on a clear and bright Spring day.  A very cheerful shade of blue…
  • Rain  is tranquil blue gray.  It reminds me of a lighter shade of denim as well…or indigo.
  • Bluebell is a super fun and vivid periwinkle-blue color.

Cloud thru Peacock

  • Pool is a nice balance of aqua + blue together.  It’s more saturated than the previous blue colors above.  Pool Frosted has a softer and somewhat lighter appearance because of the frosted surface finish.
  • Surf has more green than aqua coloring and it’s one of our most popular Lush® colors.  Goes beautifully with a variety of design aesthetics.
  • Seagrass is a more saturated version of Surf.
  • Peacock is a lovely jewel toned turquoise/ blue/ green color.

Cloud thru Inkwell

  • Rain is tranquil blue gray.  It reminds me of a lighter shade of denim as well…or indigo.
  • Fog Bank is one of our most popular gray colors.  It has a cooler base tone to it so the tile can sometime appear more blue. It’s a very calming color.
  • Storm is a darker gray color.  This also has a cooler base tone to it like our Fog Bank.
  • Taupe is a gray beige color. Warmer by comparison than Fog Bank.
  • Inkwell is a beautiful saturated inky-blue color.

Cloud thru Moss

  • Wasabi is a very wasabi colored green :).  Still bright and vivid, it’s one of our softer looking greens by comparison.
  • Surf has more green than aqua coloring and it’s one of our most popular Lush® colors.  Goes beautifully with a variety of design aesthetics.
  • Bamboo is a fresh medium spring green color.  When comparing to Lemongrass, we say it has less yellow to it.
  • Seagrass is a more saturated version of Surf.  When comparing Seagrass to our other greens, it appears to have more blue in it.  I’d also describe it as a celedon green color.
  • Lemongrass is our most bright and vivid lime-y green color.
  • Peacock is a lovely turquoise/ blue/ green color.
  • Moss is an earthy olive green color.

One last look at all these beautiful colors….

Blue Steel: Sneak Peek to Modwalls’ Newest ModDotz!

It’s always fun to name the new products and colors – especially the colors – here at modwalls!  We always get a good laugh (or groan) from the options being put out there for consideration.  It’s truly a collective effort from the modwalls team!

Last week we received a highly anticipated shipment of existing products and some new goodies.  So new in fact, we’re still loading them on to our site.  Here’s sneak preview of some of our newest products as well as some reminders of other fun items back in stock.

Without further ado…

I’d like to introduce you to our ModDotz Porcelain Penny Rounds in “Blue Steel”!  Other color name ideas were Narwhal, Calypso, Ultra-marine, New-er Navy, and Somewhat Less Navy.  We decided on Blue Steel since it made us laugh, but the nod-to-Zoolander name is still descriptive of the beautiful jewel-toned blue it is.  🙂

We love it when our tile gets noticed!

The entire crew here at modwalls tile company loves it when we get a kind word from our customers or a bit of notice in a fabulous magazine.

Right now there are two great publications giving us a little shout out.

We love Dwell magazine and have been loyal advertisers ever since they gave us a mention in their new products section during our early days,  several years ago.  Our Lush Poppy glass subway tile is shown in the TILE section of Dwell’s Spring 2013 special issue “Renovate Today!”.   We are honored to be included among some great tile manufacturers.

Though we didn’t make it to Neocon this year, fortunately our  CorkDotz cork mosaic tile was chosen to be featured in the Materials Pavilion there.  In addition it got a mention in the “Neocon issue” of  Interiors & Sources Magazine interiorssourcesmag

How is my custom blend assembled?

Since 2005, we proudly and locally outsource our modwalls® custom blend production to the wonderful people at HOPE Services.  HOPE Services is a non-profit organization which employs developmentally and physically disabled adults to do a variety of production work. Their mission is to assist individuals with disabilities to live and participate in their communities – and we LOVE this.

HOPE’s clients are responsible for making each sheet of your custom blend – a true work of art – made with pride and love!  There are currently over 30 HOPE clients dedicated to the modwalls® custom blend production.

Here are some photos of HOPE’s client’s in action:

At Hope Services working on a modwalls Brio Custom Mosaic tile blend
HOPE Services receives our customer’s custom blend recipes on a weekly basis. Each individual Brio® Mosaic Color comes with a paper facing that HOPE soaks off prior to mounting and assembling each blend.  Tiles are then set individually onto plastic grids in a random pattern according to your recipe.  Each completed grid (or 1.15 sq.ft. sheet) is then reviewed for quality control.  Once approved, a plastic film is placed over the top or “face” of the tiles to hold it in place for installation.

This entire process generally takes about 1 week to complete.  Once your blend is complete, we’ll ship it via UPS and email you the tracking number.
