modwalls® Designer Spotlight: Justrich Design at Glen Oaks Big Sur
It isn’t very often when we look at a place and say, “This is exactly how I want my home to look.” And the fact that the spectacular spot features modwalls® tile? Yep, we are officially floored.
We could not be more pleased to see modwalls® tile in the Glen Oaks Big Sur Lodge, recognized as one of the most romantic hotels in the world in the February 2011 issue of Travel + Leisure Magazine. The grounds were recently overhauled and completely revamped by super-talented interior designer Steve Justrich of Justrich Design in San Francisco, CA.
Built as an adobe motor lodge in 1957, the hotel is unique in that its smaller, quainter grounds are appealing to a younger market that can’t put up the dough for the $1000 per night alternatives in the area. But this place certainly isn’t lacking: Glen Oaks is ranked #1 on Trip Advisor and the décor certainly has something to do with it. You can tell by reading the many reviews, most of which go something like this, “Lodging in Big Sur is limited to extremely high end (Post Ranch Inn) or family run of the mill places. Glen Oaks is neither and that’s the best part. Pick up a Dwell magazine and that’s the decor of the place.”
Speaking of Dwell, that’s exactly how modwalls® tile became a part of the project. “I saw your ad in Dwell for your Brio® Emma tile blend and it opened the door. Dwell fueled the project… modwalls® was perfect because of the colors and design sensibility,” says Steve. “The feel was a little mid century and I’m not afraid of colors so Modwalls® tile colors inspired my design.”
“My design philosophy is a combination of mid century and classic modernism. I like mid-century design, but not too over the top…you don’t want it to hit you over the head. Design should be timeless.”
Steve used materials from modwalls® Lush®, Brio® and ModDotz™ collections and the lodge is still adding more units. Modwalls® Viridian™ 98% recycled glass tile and more Lush® Henry Road decorative tiles have already been ordered.
Steve wanted to make sure Glen Oaks Big Sur left an impact on its customers and that they would leave the hotel with a specific feeling of “place.” It was crucial that his strong sense of form and design came through, and selecting the right materials was an essential component. “The ModDotz™ porcelain penny rounds were so unique,” Steve says. We would add that his design is equally distinctive, and that it really took advantage of all the material has to offer. Just look at this backlit kitchenette with modwalls® ModDotz™ Sherbet tile.
And the combination of our blue ModDotz™ porcelain penny rounds with avocado green walls… LOVE!
The highlight for us is a fireplace featuring our Lush® Henry Road Butterfly Sunset/ Vapor tile and our Brio® ¾” Cilantro tile. Steve said it himself, “The fireplace is one of our favorite things. The Butterfly is so fresh.”
If you’re looking for a top-notch designer in the Bay Area or a spot to stay in Big Sur, these two top our list. We can’t wait to see what Steve Justrich of Justrich Design does with modwalls® tile next…
