Hatano Studio

By Sarah Graves

One of my favorite things about working at modwalls® is the “sneak peek” I get into the world of interior design.  Seriously, it’s so much fun!  Ok, so I have to admit that I have a case of perpetual enthusiasm in general, but I deserve some slack here because we work with so many gifted and imaginative individuals… who could help but become a little giddy sometimes?

I began working at modwalls® in 2007 in the customer service department and I’ve since transitioned into working more closely with our trade accounts. I’ve had the chance to connect with some of the hottest designers out there, who have amazing modern taste.  We get these ridiculously cool photos of our tile in action and all I can think when I see them is, “I want to go to there!”

Yumi Kagamihara, owner of Kirkland, WA based Hatano Studio is one of these designers, and she rocks.

“To produce spa-like feel to the master bathroom, we utilized Brio White Linen on the tub deck, shower enclosure wall, and vanity area. Repeated use of the same materials gives the space a more cohesive look and feel. Brio White Linen has an elegant and restrained beauty, which completes the space without competing with other materials in the room.”

Yumi recently moved to the Northwest from NYC where she worked for JGArchitects and The Kitchen Design Company. The designer is originally from Japan and says this probably plays a part in her aesthetic tending to lean toward sleek, minimal and clean design. It’s a perfect fit for a whole lotta modwalls tile options (as you can see from her gorgeous installation photos).

Yumi could be considered somewhat of a person-to-tile clairvoyant. Ok, ok… that could be pushing it… but I was pretty impressed to hear that she has a special knack of reading her customers and being able to pick out the perfect tile for the person.  Again, the proof is in the pudding; just look at the delicious photos of her work with modwalls® tile. That’s a rather important skill, especially since she thinks tile can often be the most important architectural feature of a room. And in her bathrooms, she says the tile always sets the tone for the rest of the space.

“Kitchen cabinetry is rift-sawn Douglas. Lush Cloud tile is used to add subtle water-like hue and texture.”

So why do talented, awesome designers like Yumi, with tons of resources at their fingertips keep coming back to modwalls®?  Well, in a word, convenience.

The designer said it best.

“With contemporary and modern design, material selection is critical. Materials must shine through; it may be more of a challenge than with traditional design.  Modwalls® colors are very elegant and the subtle hues are perfect.  The customer service is always excellent; I can get samples shipped directly to my customers, order online quickly and the pricing is outstanding.  At other tile stores, paying $30-$90 per square foot of tile adds up quickly.  When you shop with modwalls®, you can see actual stock levels online, which many other tile stores do not offer. This saves time for us instead of calling and asking about availability prior to presenting to clients.”

Now take a look at the stunning spaces by Hatano Studio featuring modwalls® glass tile including our Lush® 1×2 Cloud, Lush® 1×2 Fog Bank, Lush® 3×6 Fog Bank and Brio® ¾” mosaic White Linen blend.

“Glass tile adds a contemporary flair to rather traditional cabinetry styles. The Fog Bank tile color was perfect to bring out the blue-green color in the stone countertop.”

“This bathroom is on the same floor of the house as the kitchen with 3x6 Fog Bank tile (above). By using a similar color but different shaped tiles, we successfully integrated the space into the entire home.”
